{"id":2408,"date":"2020-11-11T12:41:23","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T12:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress-634681-2064240.cloudwaysapps.com\/?p=2408"},"modified":"2021-08-29T07:34:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-29T07:34:00","slug":"install-and-use-microsoft-dot-net-5-with-the-raspberry-pi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petecodes.co.uk\/install-and-use-microsoft-dot-net-5-with-the-raspberry-pi\/","title":{"rendered":"Install and use Microsoft Dot NET 5 with the Raspberry Pi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this post we&#8217;ll look at how to install and use Microsoft Dot NET 5 with the Raspberry Pi, and get started with using C# and .NET with your IoT Projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/dotnet\/announcing-net-5-0?WT.mc_id=IoT-MVP-5003506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On November 10th 2020<\/a> the .NET Team released <a href=\"https:\/\/dotnet.microsoft.com\/download\/dotnet\/5.0?WT.mc_id=IoT-MVP-5003506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.NET 5<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dotnetconf.net?WT.mc_id=IoT-MVP-5003506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dot NET Conf 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dotnetconf.net\/img\/remote-conference.svg\" alt=\"Dot NET Conf 2020\"\/><figcaption>Dot NET Conf 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>.NET 5 is the unification of the .NET Framework and .NET Core into a single cross platform development framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you&#8217;ll need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A recent Raspberry Pi &#8211; <a aria-label=\"Go shopping at the Pi Hut. (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thepihut.com\/collections\/raspberry-pi\" target=\"_blank\">Go shopping at the Pi Hut.<\/a><\/li><li>An LED, a 220 Ohm Resistor, a Button and some DuPont Connecting Cables<\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">You&#8217;ll need a SSH Client like PUTtY &#8211; <\/span><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.putty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Get it here<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.<\/span><\/li><li>To make things easier, you can;<ul><li>Setup a Samba Share, create a folder in your home directory called &#8220;<strong><em>share<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; and share that &#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/magpi\/samba-file-server\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s a link to a good guide.<\/a><\/li><li>Use a Code Editor on your machine to edit your files &#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/code.visualstudio.com?WT.mc_id=IoT-MVP-5003506\" target=\"_blank\">Use Visual Studio Code<\/a>!<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll be using a <a href=\"https:\/\/thepihut.com\/collections\/raspberry-pi\/products\/raspberry-pi-4-model-b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raspberry Pi 4B<\/a>&#8230; It&#8217;s important to note that .NET 5 will only work on an AMR32v7 processor or above&#8230; So that&#8217;s a Raspberry Pi 2 and upwards&#8230; Unfortunately this rules out the Pi Zero and Pi Zero W as they have V6 processors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e4b5b4\"><strong>Note &#8211; 16\/12\/20<\/strong>: There appears to be a regression in the GPIO library which is causing problems with the Raspberry Pi 2B&#8230; I&#8217;ll update this blog with further details once I have them.<br><br>For now, I recommend using a Raspberry Pi 3B and above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e4b5b4\"><strong>Note &#8211; 31\/12\/20<\/strong>: There is an issue with F# in the 5.0.101 Binaries which prevents apps from compiling. This will be fixed in 5.0.102.<br><br>You can find more information here&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dotnet\/runtime\/pull\/45880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/github.com\/dotnet\/runtime\/pull\/45880<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e4b5b4\"><strong>Note &#8211; 12\/02\/21<\/strong>: There is a possible issue with the Raspberry Pi 3A+ and the GPIO Nuget Package.<br><br>You may get an error when creating Pins. I&#8217;ve included a section below to help you work around the issue.<br><br>You can find more information here&#8230; <br><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dotnet\/iot\/issues\/1329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/github.com\/dotnet\/iot\/issues\/1329<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, there&#8217;s no <strong><em>apt-get install<\/em><\/strong> for .NET 5, so to install and use Microsoft Dot NET 5 with the Raspberry Pi would normally involve quite a few manual steps&#8230; However, I&#8217;ve created a single line install script to make the whole process a breeze!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your Pi, just run the following command;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>wget -O - https:\/\/raw.githubusercontent.com\/pjgpetecodes\/dotnet5pi\/master\/install.sh | sudo bash<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image has-lightbox\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress-634681-2064240.cloudwaysapps.com\/images\/dotnet5\/installdotnet5.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1764\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress-634681-2064240.cloudwaysapps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Install-Dot-NET-5-2.gif\" alt=\"Install .NET 5 on the Raspberry Pi\" class=\"wp-image-2415\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Installing .NET 5 with a script<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This runs the install script as root, so obviously take your own precautions here&#8230;. This is because we&#8217;ve made changes to the .bashrc file. Specifically, we&#8217;ve added an environment variable to the .basrc file that tells the system where to find the .NET runtime. This variable won&#8217;t be loaded until after we restart our session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t reboot, when you try to run your application for the first time, you may receive the following warning;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>A fatal error occurred.
